Champions of Missions - Preventive Health Partners

Preventive Health Partners, a national leader in ancillary health services, sponsored the medicine that traveled with a group of medical missionaries to the Dominican Republic from July 18th to the 31st, 2017.  The sponsorship also partially funds a health student to administer that medicine.

The delegation delivered patient care and provided medical resources to Dominicans and Haitians living in the northwest corner of the Dominican Republic, an area of the island extremely underserved with proper medical care and medicine.  This one-week volunteer project was staffed by medical and non-medical individuals, as well as health students from various U.S. schools.  Together, several organizations harnessed the expertise of dedicated health and medical professionals to see dozens of locals and provide basic treatments and medications.

Patient care—licensed physicians and residents (under physician supervision) attended to patients at make-shift and established community clinics, working closely with Dominican physicians.

Medical mission education—physicians provided continuing education for health students who serve as the future generation or medical missionaries.

Service —Non-medical missionaries partnered with local churches to help run the entire operation of the clinic, which included registration, translation, prayer, delivering of medicines and playing with children.

“There is a staggering need for medical care on the Dominican Haiti border,” says Alex Miranda, founder of JosesHands.org. “We are grateful to each of our medical student volunteers for serving and to Preventive Health Partners for helping sponsor the medicine and students this year. This delegation’s work will have a huge impact on the people of the Dominican Republic.”

The Preventive Health Partners sponsorship covered expenses for thousands of dollars of medical equipment and supplies, as well as pharmaceutical OTC and prescription medicine that traveled with the group into the country and was distributed during the mission.

Jose’s Hands

Until every health student goes on a medical mission trip, we have work to do. Founded in 2009 to honor the late Maj. Jose Jamil Miranda, MD, MPH, US Army, Jose’s Hands aims to address the shortage of mission doctors and professionals while the world’s underserved population continues to grow.
